The fluorescence method serves a two-fold purpose. In the physician's office and in mass screening programs, it can be employed as a fast prescreening procedure, greatly reducing the number of samples that need be submitted to a cytology laboratory for inspection by the cytopathologist. The trained cytotechnician can use the method for the rapid screening of smears and also for the final cytodiagnosis.
